On February 22-26, 2010, twenty-five managers from 19 different local, state, and federal agencies and organizations attended a 5-day training on coastal adaptation to climate change held at the historic Marconi Center on the edge of Tomales Bay. This was the first domestic version of what was originally a 10-day international course taught by NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries (ONMS). The Center for Ocean Solutions worked with staff from ONMS, the NOAA Coastal Services Center, the Bay Conservation and Development Commission (BCDC), the California Coastal Commission, and the National Marine Protected Areas Center to customize this training for California agencies. The weeklong training incorporated current climate change science and highlighted local projected impacts of climate change on coastal and marine ecosystems, coastal infrastructure and social systems. The participants became familiar with adaptation strategies and options designed to bolster both ecosystem and human community resilience to climate change impacts as they worked through a rigorous process to develop and implement adaptation strategies (including specific measures) that can integrate into local, regional, state and federal management plans.
