Pacific Ocean Initiative

The Pacific Ocean covers half of the world's ocean area and one-third its total surface, making it the largest single geographic feature on our planet. This vast region supports many complex ecosystems and ocean-based economies, producing a wealth of resources for local and global consumption. However, sustainably managing these natural and economic resources presents an enormous challenge. In light of this, the Center for Ocean Solutions (COS) has launched the Pacific Ocean Project, an international collaboration to identify threats and solutions for building a healthy Pacific future.

Threats to the Pacific: A Consensus and a Plan

COS - in collaboration with the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Global Marine Programme and the Ocean Conservancy - brought together leading scientists from more than 30 countries to develop a scientific consensus statement on the threats and opportunities for action to ecosystems and people of the Pacific Ocean.
